YELLOW IS AS YELLOW DOES

Art Bell Knows A Thing Or Two About Yellow Journalism, Sensationalistic Antics, And Giving Listeners The Half Of The Story He Wants Them To Hear

While I may not agree with everything Jeff Rense offers on his program pertaining to many controversial topics and differing viewpoints, I can attest to Jeff's willingness, unlike Art Bell, to share those varying viewpoints and other information with his listeners and those visiting the rense.com website. Jeff is not afraid to present the other half of the story, again, unlike Art.

What you're reading has nothing to do with Art's views on 9-11 or his "wing nut" comments. In all fairness, Coast To Coast AM has hosted those promoting 9-11 conspiracy theories. What you're reading has nothing to do with charges made by Art of Jeff being anti-Semitic. Though, I find such abhorrent charges absurd. Art has every right to his opinion, whether you agree or not. What you're reading is in response to part of an open letter authored by Art in which he tosses around a charge of "yellow journalism" offered under the guise of an opinion.

Yellow journalism can quickly be defined as journalism in which factual reporting is replaced with sensationalism. Sound familiar? Yellow journalism comes down to you getting only the information one deems necessary to give or lend more credibility to, as opposed to presenting you with all the known information. Yellow dandelions anyone? You're offered the more dramatic half of the story, which only leaves you with fifty-percent of the information on which to base your decision or opinion.

Art seems to have a problem with addressing that other half of the story. Art doesn't like to ruin a good story or challenge a guest by bothering his listeners with the facts. Art Bell's audience is often treated to tall tales while being supplied only half the story, usually the sensationalistic or more controversial half.

A few examples…

The Hale Bopp Companion

No need to go into detail about this travesty. While Art and others have attempted to take credit for exposing this hoax, well after Art began promoting this ridiculous story, we all know Jeff and his webmaster James Neff were actually responsible for exposing it and looked well beyond the sensational claims being made.

I spoke with Linda Moulton Howe on the phone during this UFO soap opera. Linda told me she had talked to Art about an astronomer refuting the Hale Bopp companion claim. Art's response according to Linda: "So what? Controversy is good for ratings." Linda told me she would deny ever having told me this if I said anything publicly. Let the denying begin.

Reed UFO Fraud

Art squeezed as many shows as he could out of this notorious UFO scam after heavily promoting and arguably endorsing the case saying, "These are original Kodak photographs of an alien encounter."

I along with many others provided Art information about several key inconsistencies and factual inaccuracies with "Dr.Reed", his story, and his supposed evidence. Instead of addressing these issues, Art called those challenging the story "pixel counters" and continued to host "Dr.Reed" and his cohorts as they took listeners for a ride.

"Dr.Reed" exploited those taken in by his UFO caper for thousands of dollars through book sales, public appearances, and private donations. One person reportedly gave "Dr.Reed" $10,000 to help him get his story out. Some might say that no one forced people to buy anything "Dr.Reed" was selling. However, these same people exploited by "Dr.Reed" might have not given a single cent had Art made them privy to the information presented by the so-called "pixel counters." Well, it was a "pixel counter" who exposed the Reed UFO Fraud here at this website, much to the ire of those invested in the story.

Jeff didn't care that the "Dr.Reed" case had spawned a zealous following. Jeff didn't care if the information he shared exposing the case as a fraud might make him unpopular in certain UFO circles. Jeff didn't care that he wouldn't be able to stretch several shows out of exposing the hoax.

The night I appeared on Jeff's program to tell the other half of the story revealing the true identity of "Dr.Reed" and exposing this caper, Art conveniently canceled his program for that night. Art never responded for comment on the case and never offered his listeners any in-depth information. The other half of the story again left at the wayside…

Sean David Morton

Art loves advertising supposed psychic Sean David Morton as having "more hits than the Mob or Barry Bonds." This strange attitude toward this long time guest continued well after I exposed Morton in a series of articles.

You may recall The Shameless Psychic And His Prophecy Of Lies, my investigative piece exposing many of Morton's claims. Morton apparently didn't like the attention. A few years after publishing the article on my website and having invited Morton several times to comment or refute what I had discovered, Morton tried to silence me with a $1,000,000 lawsuit. Morton hit one bump in the road he didn't see coming: You actually have to produce evidence in court as opposed to just talking.

Amazing that Morton, advertising himself as "one of America's greatest psychics", didn't have the precognitive ability to see that he would lose his own lawsuit and be ordered to pay my attorney $16,000 in legal fees after being challenged to provide evidence of his claims.

Morton lost his lawsuit because he couldn't present a microscopic grain of evidence to prove any of a number of his claims, including his claim of having earned a doctorate degree in Theology. One might surmise this would be easy to prove by simply providing your degree and/or copy of your doctoral thesis. Morton was given the simple task of providing proof that I had indeed made a single false claim about him. He couldn't do it.

You'd think this would raise an eyebrow with Art. Nope. Art hopped right along and came to the defense of his long time guest. Art held nothing short of a one-sided radio pep rally for Morton, never mentioning details about the lawsuit, who the lawsuit was filed against, what the specific charges were against Morton, or where listeners could see the information refuting Morton's claims.

Art told Morton, "But the accusations, I would like to deal with those." Of course, this never led into any questions focused on Morton's claims that I had clearly refuted. Instead, Art asked Morton about his hit ratio and Morton spun on not once addressing any specific information I had published nor offering any of the supposed evidence he often boasts of having to refute it.

Morton also claims to be a trained remote viewer, another of his many refuted claims. Morton charges upward of $650 per student for a three day workshop on "Spiritual Remote Viewing", which Morton now sells as his "Spiritual Survival Workshop."

After having been vindicated and having the facts on record with the courts, Jeff invited me on his program to talk about the lawsuit. He also invited Morton to come on to tell his half of the tale. Of course, Morton went on the air with Art where he knew he would be immune from offering any proof or being asked anything other than powder-puff interview questions. Morton called me a liar on the air without offering or being asked to offer any proof. I was referred to as an "individual" and tossed in with "various websites" who were "after" Morton. Art never identified the source of the information, once again leaving listeners without the other half of the story...the half with the facts on record.

Now Art advertises Morton as a "controversial psychic." Really, there's nothing controversial about anybody with the inability to prove their claims...

Ed Dames

He says he can find Osama bin Laden within 72 hours. He claims to have located the murderers/kidnappers of teenage girls. He claims to be able to find serial killers from afar. He says he's used his abilities to look in on Satan and to see inside UFOs. What if this person said they could teach you the powers to do the same thing if you attended one of his classes for a few thousand dollars or bought a tape or DVD kit? I'd say you'd be better off saving your money...

The name Ed Dames is recognizable to many. This self-proclaimed remote viewer is well known for his many wild predictions of doom, destruction, wars, rampant disease, nuclear holocausts, or any number of other gloomy scenarios. Problem with Dames is that he has a hit rate of zero. Nada. Zip. Nothing predicted by Dames has ever come to pass. Never.

Dames promised to bring Art a gold treasure to his door step. Dames told Art he used his remote viewing skills to locate hidden treasure and that the treasure would be brought to Art's house. Time came to pony up with the treasure, but Dames failed to deliver...again.

You'd think this would be a big problem for Art. After all, how many missed predictions does it take before you figure out that someone is full of it? It appears that Art's threshold number for missed predictions must be astronomically high.

Art hosted remote viewing pioneer Dr. Russell Targ some time ago who challenged Dames' hit record on the air saying it was zero. Art replied, "Yet...," after trying to defend Dames. Yet? Yet what? Dames has a hit ratio of zero. Yet, Art keeps on promoting Dames on the air as having some sort of credibility.

In the open letter to his listeners, Art writes, "...I also feel we must be alert to BS when we see it." Indeed. We also should be alert for it when we hear it all the time as well.

Some interesting quotes from Art

--Art Bell, April 17, 2001

" I'm still a reporter. "
-- Art Bell, March 5, 1999, appearing on Larry King Live when asked if he was a believer or a reporter.

" I had a lot to go on, Larry, and so I broke the story... "
-- Art Bell, March 5, 1999, to Larry King regarding the bogus Hale-Bopp Companion saga. Wait, don't reporters break stories?

The veracity of Reed's claim, says Bell, is unimportant, though he admits he wouldn't feature a guest who was a proven fraud. "It's a fascinating story--you don't get many like Jonathan Reed's, with pictures," says Bell.
--Article on the Jonathan Reed UFO Hoax that appeared May 26, 2001 in the Seattle Weekly.

" I wouldn't want the listeners to think it wasn't real. "
-- Art Bell to Russel Dowden of SETLAB after Dowden told Bell a picture of an alien was hoaxed by an FX team and he could prove it.
